Writing your business plan

This week in practice management we're going to be focusing on pulling together everything that you've learnt so far into the writing up of your business plan. We'll also look at the importance of managing yourself and your attitude.

  • Read - Chapter 3 of Roseberry.

  • Consider is there anything that you need to be clarified about anything that we've studied?

Taxation

This week in Practice management we're going to have a look at the basics of taxation within New Zealand. We'll also talk about how to deal with taxation within your assignment.

Nobody seemed interested in my offer of an additional tutorial on working with financial statements, but it's still open if anyone is actually still interested in this.

Money, money, money

This week in Practice management, it's all about the money. We're going to look at book-keeping and financial statements. By the end of this week, you should be well on the way to writing up the financial element of your business plan.

Over the next five weeks, you should try to make progress on the development of your business plan. Remember to consider all of the material that was presented to you last week while you are doing this.

In the week which starts on the 6th of April, we will start looking at the financial side of running a business.

Week 1 - Introduction to practice management

Introduction

The aim of this course is to provide you with the skills and understanding you need to operate a private practice. To help you develop those skills and that understanding, we will cover over this semester
  1. Introduction to business structure and functions
  2. Marketing tools
  3. Perception management
  4. Business planning
  5. Finance
You will integrate this learning by producing a business plan.

This week

This week we will introduce you to the first four sections of the course in our elluminate sessions, you will be expected to work with this material in the development of a business plan.

Tasks for this week
  1. Get prepared - You will need the textbook (Roseberry), and you will also need Biz Info's (free) business planning toolkit - Planning for Success. Roseberry can be found at UBS, and I'm sure that you'll be able to find Biz Info yourself.

  2. Virtual class 1
    Monday 23rd Feb 3-5pm (remember to sign in early 3-5 mins broadband / 30 mins dial-up)
    Introduction to practice management
    Marketing tools

  3. Read and take notes - Chapters 3-5 (Roseberry) - This is something which can be done over the next couple of weeks

  4. Virtual class 2
    Thursday 26th Feb 1-3pm (remember to sign in early 3-5 mins broadband / 30 mins dial-up)
    Perception management
    Business planning

  5. In each of the classes you will be introduced to material, and asked to engage in out-of-class activities related to the development of your business concept and business plan.
Make sure you've got those elluminate classes scheduled.
